Here it is, a brand new Alstom Coradia Continental "Regio-S-Bahn" (ET440) of the NWB entering the Heidkrug train station.
Those will kick the dreadful BR425 "Squeaker" EMU's of the tracks around here on the 12th December.

Last weekend the NWB made test runs with these, they will enter regular service on the 12th December.

The NWB had a nice idea, as the trains were stopping at every station anyway they announced that people could ride these trains for free on that weekend.

What exactly is a "Regio-S-Bahn?" Is it a regionalbahn train that runs with the frequency of an S-bahn?

In a way, it seems like a natural progression.

What started out as essentially a metro system covering a metropolitan area (Berlin, Hamburg) morphed into a commuter rail system covering a wider regional area.
